THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University women's basketball team will face a familiar foe in its first road game of 2015, as
Coretta Brown and company will head up to Cochran, Ga., to face the Lady Knights of Middle Georgia State University on Nov. 4. Last season, the Lady Night Hawks posted a perfect 2-0 record versus the Southern States Athletic Conference foe.
Despite falling 63-59 at home to Reinhardt in its season opener, there is ample reason for optimism for Thomas University. The team gave up two long runs to the Lady Eagles, one that saw Reinhardt outscore TU 20-8 and then an extended 26-15 stretch, but the Lady Night Hawks battled back and responded each time. Three different players reached double figures for Thomas and, despite the team's poor shooting percentage (28-percent), the Lady Night Hawks competed for 40 minutes with one of the most talented team's on its schedule this season.
The focus will now shift to Middle Georgia State as TU begins a stretch of four road games in less than three weeks.
Despite posting a record under .500, MGSU was one of the most competitive teams in the Southern States Athletic Conference a season ago. The Lady Knights went 0-4 versus Top 25 teams, but the average margin of defeat for MGSU in those games was just 11 points per game.
Additionally, the Lady Knights will return one of the best duos in the SSAC in Shaquita and Shaketa Hodges. Often the two most talented players on the floor, the Hodges combined for a whopping 42 points in a defeat versus Auburn-Montgomery last season. Shaketa Hodges led Middle Georgia State's scoring attack, as the rising senior scored 20+ points on 11 separate occasions in 2014.
Keeping the Lady Knights' talented scoring pair in check on Wednesday will be of the utmost importance, but it would seem that the Lady Night Hawks have a great opportunity to stifle MGSU's entire offense with good rebounding.
Thomas was great on the glass in the season opener, as the team grabbed 50 rebounds to just 32 for Reinhardt, a statistic that kept TU in the game despite lackluster shooting. Should the Lady Night Hawks shoot better from the floor on Wednesday, the team has a great chance to find the win column for the first time this season.
Tip-off in Cochran, Ga., is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. from the Morris Gymnasium.
