THOMASVILLE, Ga. – Coming off of a disappointing home loss to Brewton-Parker, the Thomas University women's basketball team will hit the road to face the Mobile Lady Rams on Nov. 17. The Lady Night Hawks have flashed signs of significant talent so far this season, but the team has constantly struggled early in games.
Through four games,
Coretta Brown's team has been outscored 145-102 in the first half. The team is significantly better after the halftime break, however, as it holds a 153-124 edge in the final two quarters. The constant second half surges are encouraging, but Thomas will need a consistently solid performance to upset a quality Mobile team on the road.
The Lady Rams are off to a 3-0 start so far this season, including a 59-51 win over (RV) Southern University at New Orleans. Billy Evans' team returned nearly every top player from the 2014 team that went 15-13, including leading scorer Kali Koenig.
Koenig is averaging 13.3 points per game so far in 2015, a number that is good enough for second on the team. She undoubtedly headlines the returning players for Mobile, as the junior guard was named Second Team All-Conference in 2014. She averaged 11.8 points per game and was second on the team in assists a season ago. Koenig was also named to the SSAC All-Freshman team after her rookie campaign in 2013.
Guard Starla Daggan currently leads Mobile in scoring with an average of 17 points per game. She dropped 23 points in a Nov. 7 win over Carver Bible College.
Additionally, the Lady Rams are led in rebounding by Elizabeth Sykes, whose 7.0 boards per game slightly edges Molly Speed and Alicia Curry, who average 6.3 rebounds per game, respectively.
The return of a veteran team led by Koenig bodes well for Mobile's chances this season, as the team could reach the 20-win plateau for the first time since 2013 (23-9).
Tuesday's game should be a close one, as the Lady Night Hawks have the ability to play with nearly any team in the NAIA. A fast start, in addition to generating quality shots, will be necessary to hang with the Lady Rams in their building. TU is outrebounding opponents by a staggering 15.8 boards per game, but the team is shooting just 35 percent from the floor.
Bra'shey Ali,
Ze'Nya Butler,
Bria Joyner-Williams and
Rayven Thomas are all averaging double-figure scoring for the Lady Night Hawks so far this season.
Tipoff in Mobile, Ala., is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. EST.
