THOMASVILLE – The Thomas University men's soccer team will host SCAD-Savannah Oct. 28 at Remington Park. The contest, which is a rematch of last season's TSC Tournament Championship, will be the Night Hawks final regular season match of 2015.
Currently sitting in third place in the conference table,
Ricky Zambrano's side could make use of one more conference win, as the team is just one game behind TSC leaders Southeastern and St. Thomas.
Earning the #3 seed for the Sun Conference tournament has been a good omen for the Night Hawks in the past, however, as Thomas finished in the same position in 2014 before running the table and beating SCAD 2-1 to earn an automatic bid to the national tournament and the title of TSC Champion.
Wednesday's opponent, despite rostering several quality players, has not fared nearly as well this season as last. The Bees, coached by Tom Melville, did not lost a single conference match until the TSC final a season ago, but the team is just 2-5-1 in league play this season.
One major reason for the team's 2015 decline is its performance in one-goal matches. Last season, the Bees were 8-3 in such contests, a statistic that aided the team to a two-month-long winning streak. This season has been a vastly different story, however, as SCAD is just 1-5 (0-2 in conference) in matches decided by a single goal.
Thomas should not take the Bees lightly, though, as the team still rosters several quality players with past postseason accolades. SCAD is led by Naim El-Harriti, a junior midfielder who earned Third Team All-American honors in 2014. The team also receives significant contribution from Honorable Mention All-American Jordan Trinci-Lyne.
Trinci-Lyne has been far and away the side's best player this season, as his 12 goals lead the Bees by a wide margin. No other player has more than three.
Should the Night Hawks defense, which has allowed just two goals in its last three matches, contain SCAD's top player, the team will have a great opportunity to earn three points and finish the regular season with an impressive 14-3 record.
Unlike Wednesday's opponent, Thomas has received goal-scoring contributions from several different players this season.
Severin Abt leads the team with nine goals, following by
Lyle Gifford's six.
Eric Persson,
Juan Figueroa and
Jesper Svall have five, four and three goals, respectively. Such balance will make the Night Hawks a dangerous and capable opponent during postseason play in the coming weeks.
First touch of the Night Hawks' regular season finale is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
