THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University men's basketball team is set to travel to West Point, Ga., on Oct. 27 to open up the 2015-16 season versus the Point Skyhawks. The contest, which is a rematch of the Night Hawks' 100-68 season-opening win a season ago, will be
Brent Crews' first as head coach.
Thomas, which was tabbed to finish sixth of nine teams in the Sun Conference this season, has a difficult early-season schedule, as five of the team's first six games will take place away from Thomasville. Despite the early road challenges, the Night Hawks have a great opportunity to start the year off with a victory.
The Night Hawks' first opponent, Point, struggled to just four wins in 2014, but the Skyhawks have reason to believe that the team's win total could at least double this season. Coach Alan Wilson's squad graduated just two seniors at the conclusion of last season, and five of the team's 13 rostered players were freshmen. That kind of retention, coupled with the signing of Columbus High School standout Karl Ivey II, bodes well for the success of the team moving forward.
Additionally, the Skyhawks will return Seth Houston and Vincent Driscoll, the team's leading scorer and rebounder, respectively.
Houston led Point with 14.03 points per game in 2014, and the sharp-shooting guard scored 25 or more points on seven different occasions. He shot 41.3-percent from distance, 78-percent from the free throw line and 45-percent overall from the floor.
Driscoll, who also led the team in blocks and averaged 12 points per game, grabbed double-digit rebounds four separate times en route to an impressive season total of four double-doubles.
Driscoll scored 15 points but managed just two rebounds last season against the Night Hawks, while Houston also scored 15 in the 2014 loss to the Night Hawks.
Thomas has some returning firepower this season as well, as junior guard
Adonai Rogers will look to improve upon his impressive sophomore season. In 2014, Rogers averaged 13.17 points per game, including eight different times scoring 17 or more. He achieved his second-highest point total of the season last year against the Skyhawks, as he poured in 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting.
Rogers also has the highest rebounds per game average of any returning player.
The combined 2014-15 record of Thomas University's first three opponents is 19-64. While each of those contests will be played on the road, the Night Hawks have an excellent opportunity to grab some early-season momentum.
The team's first home game of the season will be on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, against Brewton-Parker.
Tip-off between the Night Hawks and Skyhawks is set for 7:00 p.m. on Oct. 27.
