Box Score 2 Baseball (22-16) swept Edward Waters College (17-19) in a Saturday afternoon double header at Varnedoe Stadium.
TU seemed ready to wrap up a game one victory, leading 1-0 with one out in the top of the seventh, when EWC knotted the game at one with a run scoring single. Thomas was unable to score in their half of the seventh, sending the game into extra innings. Edward Waters went ahead 2-1 in the top of the eighth but the Night Hawks rallied to load the bases in the bottom half of the inning. A single by junior first baseman
Josh Bruijn (2-3, RBI, BB) tied the game and TU walked off with the win on a sacrifice fly by senior right fielder
Trey Griffin (0-3, RBI). Senior relief pitcher
John Gainey (6-3) picked up the win. A solid start by junior starting pitcher
Ben Overman put the Night Hawks in a position to win after he tossed 6 1/3 innings, allowing only one earned run on five hits.
Griffin took the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the second and deposited it over the left field wall to give TU a 1-0 advantage. Thomas tacked on two more and seemed ready to cruise but EWC made it a one run game in the third. The Night Hawks responded with one in the third and five in the fourth to put the game away. Kurtis Gens (3-3) went all the way, allowing three runs (two earned) while scattering seven hits, for the win.
Thomas will look for the series sweep tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
