Box Score 2 The Night Hawks (28-17, 19-8) swept a Sun Conference double header against St. Thomas University (29-19, 17-9), 8-6 & 11-7, on Saturday afternoon at Varnedoe Stadium to clinch the #3 seed at the 2014 TSC Tourney beginning next Friday in Ft. Myers, Fla.
TU found themselves behind, 6-2, thru 5 ½ innings of game one. In the bottom of the sixth, the Night Hawks struck back to score three runs on two hits while taking advantage of a STU error to make it a 6-5 game. Thomas would use another three run inning in the bottom of the eighth to take an 8-6 lead and went on to blank the Bobcats in the ninth to seal the win. Junior center fielder
Brandon Singer (3-4, 2 R, RBI) had three hits and senior designated hitter
Chris Kitlas (2-4, 2 RBI) drove in two runs for the Night Hawks. Freshman relief pitcher
Thomas Bevis (1-3) tossed three shutout innings for the win.
The storyline began the same in game two for TU as once again they fell behind early, allowing four runs in the second and two in the third for a 6-0 deficit. Once again, it was the bottom of the sixth that proved to be the changing point as Thomas scored five runs to make it a 6-5 game and followed that up with a six run seventh inning to take a commanding 11-6 lead. STU got a run back in the eighth but the Night Hawks shut down the Bobcats rally and disallowed STU of mounting any comeback with a scoreless top of the ninth for the 11-7 win. Senior right fielder
Trey Griffin (2-4, R, 2 RBI), junior left fielder
Jeremy Crosby (2-5, 2 R, 2 RBI) and junior second baseman
Austin Corbitt (3-5, 2 R, 2 RBI) each drove in two runs. Junior relief pitcher
Nick Riley (1-1) tossed six innings out of the pen for the win.
Thomas will enter the TSC Tourney as the #3 seed, time and opponent of the Night Hawks first game will be announced after seeding is complete.
