Box Score The St. Thomas University Bobcats (29-17, 17-7) struck first in the opener of a critical Sun Conference three game series, topping Thomas Baseball (26-17, 17-8), 6-1, on Friday afternoon at Varnedoe Stadium.
STU scored a run in the second to take the early 1-0 advantage and the teams exchanged blank frames over the next 3 ½ innings. In the top of the sixth the Bobcats exploded for five runs, capitalizing on two Night Hawk errors to score five unearned runs on only two hits. TU got a run back in the ninth to make it a 6-1 game but it proved to be too little too late. Junior starting pitcher
Ben Overman (6-4) dropped his sixth game of the year, allowing five runs (one earned) on four hits over 5 1/3 innings. The teams combined for only nine hits.
TU will look to bounce back tomorrow afternoon at noon in game one of a double header.
