Morgan Stifles Tritons

Box Score

Sophomore starting pitcher Evan Morgan (3-0) stifled the NCAA D2 Eckerd College Tritons (8-4), as TU (13-9) topped Eckerd 2-0 on Wednesday evening in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Morgan tossed seven innings of shutout ball, limiting Eckerd to only four hits while striking four Tritons. Senior right fielder Trey Griffin (1-2, 2 BB, 2B) drove in senior catcher Andrew Crane (1-2, 2R, BB) with a double to deep left-center in the top of the second, to give the Night Hawks a 1-0 lead that would stand till the ninth. TU opened the ninth with back to back walks, after a runner was caught stealing, they used two walks and a base hit to load the bases. With a chance for a much needed insurance run, junior second baseman Austin Corbitt (0-3, RBI, BB), would come through, showing discipline at the plate to produce a walk that would bring in Crane. Senior closer John Gainey notched his first save of the year with a scoreless ninth to seal the win.

Baseball continues their spring break trip on Friday evening at 6 p.m. in Daytona Beach, Fla., when they return to Sun Conference action, taking on NAIA #3 Embry Riddle University in a battle for the top of the TSC standings. Riddle and TU will conclude their three game set with a double header on Saturday at 1 p.m.
