The Faulkner University Eagles (10-2), ranked #1 in the NAIA, swept a double header and the three game non-conference series away from the Night Hawks (7-7) on Saturday afternoon at Varnedoe Stadium.
In game one, Faulkner shutout TU 3-0. The Eagles produced a run in the first and tacked on single runs in the fourth and fifth to seal the game. TU rallied in the bottom of the seventh, getting the tying run to the plate with one out, but the Faulkner reliever finished off the Night Hawks with two fly ball outs. TU was held scoreless for only the second time this season. Junior starting pitcher
Ben Overman (3-1) dropped his first game of the year after working all seven innings, allowing three earned runs on eight hits.
TU jumped out ahead 2-0 after one, in game two, and made it 6-0 on a second inning grand slam by junior first baseman
Josh Bruijn (3-4, 2 R, 5 RBI, 2B, HR, SB). The home run was the first by a Night Hawk this season. Faulkner got two runs back in the fourth and took the lead with five runs in their half of the seventh. Thomas retook the lead with two runs in the bottom half of the inning but Faulkner struck back, in the top of the eighth, scoring a run to tie the game at eight. Chris Kitlas (1-5, RBI), in the bottom half of the inning, put TU ahead once more and in position to salvage game three of the series. Faulkner opened the ninth with back to back doubles to tie the game and a TU error would give the Eagles a 10-9 lead. In the home half of the ninth, Faulkner set down the Night Hawks, in order, to wrap up the series sweep. Junior relief pitcher
Nick Riley (0-1) took the loss out of the pen, surrendering one earned run on three hits in a third of an inning.
Thomas will look to snap a five game skid on Tuesday February 25
th, traveling to Columbus, Ga. to face Southern Poly Tech in a neutral site non-conference double header beginning at 2PM.
