The starting pitching led the way for TU Baseball (2-0) in an opening day double header sweep, 6-0 & 5-0, of Montreat College (0-2) on Saturday afternoon at Varnedoe Stadium.
Senior pitcher
Kurtis Gens (1-0) blanked Montreat in game one tossing 6 1/3 innings, allowing only two hits while striking out seven. TU blew the game open in the first when senior left fielder
Jeremy Crosby cleared the bases on a one out double off the left field wall after two walks and base hit had loaded the bases. Thomas added another run in the inning for an early 4-o lead and put the game away with two runs in the third.
In game two, senior pitcher
Ben Overman (1-0) tossed a no hitter over the first four innings. Overman went all the way and held Montreat to only three hits. TU broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the fourth, adding two more in the fifth and a single run in the sixth. Junior center fielder
Brandon Singer had three hits and drove in a run. Four Night Hawks drove in runs in the game.
The shutouts mark the first time since 2008 that the Night Hawks pitching staff blanked opponents in consecutive games. In 2008, TU blanked Bethel College, 11-0, and Bellevue University, 1-0, at the Warner Invitational, as part of a three game winning streak.
TU and Montreat will wrap up the opening series with a single game tomorrow beginning at 1PM.
