No. 20 MBB Outlasts Coastal Georgia

Box Score

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University men's basketball program added another notch in the winner's column last night downing College of Coastal Georgia 81-73.

The Night Hawks jumped out to a 16 point, 27-11 lead in the first eight minutes of the contest.  Both the Mariners and Night Hawks equally committed a few rounds of turnovers and made baskets over the next eight minutes before the Mariners offense fought back with a 15-4 run to bring the contest to a 37-33 TU lead at halftime.

After the intermission, the Mariners captured their first lead of the second half (38-37) on a 12 foot jumper by Obie Foreman.  After a timeout by TU's head coach Stephen Cox, the squad regrouped and charged out to take a 45-40 lead with just under 15 minutes remaining in the contest.  The lead quickly vanished for the first of five ties and seven lead changes in the second half.

The Hunter Green and White set deadlocked at 68-68 with the Mariners with 3:49 left in regulation.  Heads up defense and conversions at the charity stripe led Thomas to a 13-5 run to finish the game and capture the 81-73 victory over Coastal Georgia.

Coach Cox reflected, "This game was a huge in state battle. I'm certainly happy with the result, but we must continue to work on the process. Turnovers and technical fouls have to cease in order to beat good teams in the Sun Conference.  Our guys hung in tonight and being that we have won 11 games already; we've been there and have done that before. We need to clean up some things in the film room, but we excited about being in the Top 20 in the country and undefeated in conference play."

Senior Max Grace led all Night Hawks in scoring posting 22 points while collecting one rebound and two assists.  Alan Love captured his second double-double of the season scoring 14 points while bringing down 13 boards, 10 defensive and 3 offensive.  Sophomore guard Adonai Rogers also had a career night tying his heights in steals (5) and assists (3) in a single contest.  Rogers also contributed 17 points and four rebounds in the victory.

Thomas improves to 11-1, 2-0 in TSC play, on the season dropping the Mariners to 3-10 on the year.

Cox continued, "Going into Christmas break, our record certainly reflects how hard these guys have worked this semester athletically and academically. Almost half of our team earned above a 3.0 GPA."

The Night Hawks return to action on Sunday, Dec. 28 when they travel to High Point, N.C. to face off with NCAA Division I foe High Point University. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.  The game will be broadcast on the Big South Network.  It can be accessed by clicking here.
