MBB Survives Surging Comeback by Eagles, Remains Undefeated

Box Score
THOMASVILLE, Ga. – After an early first half scare, the Thomas University men's basketball team edged out Pensacola Christian College down the stretch for the 83-79 victory.

The Eagles jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead in the first four minutes of the game and increased its lead to nine with 14:28 remaining in the half before the Night Hawks made an offensive surge and comeback.  The Night Hawks took a temporary 17-16 lead on a fouled layup, and-one conversion by Alan Love.

Pensacola centered its offense efforts through the hands of Joel Thomas and Jon Andrews.  Andrews had a double-double effort on the evening with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Thomas had a game high of 21 points.  Through their individual efforts, the Eagles regained the lead and drove the gap to 34-26 with 4:09 remaining in the half.

The Night Hawks powered back to answer with a 14-0 run to take a 41-36 lead into the half.

While the Night Hawks opened the first portion of the second half with a dominate offensive front that pushed their lead to 12 at its height, the Eagles refused to go down without a fight.  With 1:06 remaining in the contest, the Eagles made two desperation three-pointers and forced two key Night Hawk turnovers to narrow the mark to 82-79 with 13 seconds remaining in the game.

A last second foul by Andrews put Javoris Cooks on the line.  Cooks missed the first but converted the second to cement the game for the Night Hawks to remain perfect on the season.

The Night Hawks had five players in double figures.  Love led the way with 19 points and three rebounds while Adonai Rogers had 16 points, five rebounds, and a season-high five steals.  Marcus Humose (14), Cooks (11), and Max Grace (10) also contributed to the Night Hawks' winning effort.

"Great job by the guys today in front of a good home crowd over Thanksgiving break," stated head coach Stephen Cox. "This sport is crazy! In our preparation yesterday, we were turning the basketball over like crazy. I was thinking today would be a long day, but we only committed 11 [turnovers]. That's a good number for us. We had 16 assists on 25 baskets, so the guys were sharing the basketball. This is one of the few games that we shot better from behind the arch than we did from the field. I think a big difference in today's game was we were able to force 21 turnovers with our press defense. I'm happy with the win. It's now a quick turnaround and time to get ready for a good Brewton-Parker (7-1) team on the road. We have to be ready!"

Thomas improves to 9-0, 1-0 in TSC play, on the season sending Pensacola Christian 2-8.

The Night Hawks return to the court on Monday, Dec. 1 when they travel to Mount Vernon, Ga., to face the Barons of Brewton-Parker College. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
