BLUEFIELD, W. Va – The Thomas Night Hawks opened the Vincent Davis era against the Bluefield Rams on Saturday afternoon.
The Night Hawks struggled in the first half to gain any rhythm as the offense could not gain any traction.
Meanwhile, the Rams struck quickly with a touchdown on their first possession and second possession of the game.
In the second quarter, the defense began to gain steam as they forced Bluefield to punt it away. However, penalties derailed the drive for Thomas and then a fumble recovered by the Rams at the Night Hawk four-yard line set up another touchdown.
The Next offensive drive brought the Night Hawks all the way to the Bluefield 31 but from there the drive stalled.
Going into the locker room Thomas faced a 21-0 deficit.
With only four minutes left in the third, the Night Hawks took over at their own 22.
Cecil Crawford started off the drive by ripping off a 13-yard run, then Orion Walker added a huge 23-yard run to get into Bluefield territory.
Following a delay of game penalty, Thomas faced a 4th and 1 and Crawford did it again taking the ball all the way to the 10-yard line.
After a pair of runs brought them to the three at the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Night Hawks finally punched it in as Crawford broke through for the touchdown.
The ensuing Rams' drive faced a 3rd and short, but a well-timed jump by Tre Williams caused an interception where he took it 60 yards to the house to cut the lead to seven.
Unfortunately, a field goal and a touchdown by Bluefield increased the lead to 17. However, a long drive from Thomas was capped off with a score by Walker to cut the lead to 11, but there was not enough time left for another drive as Bluefield came away with a victory.
The Night Hawks will go on the road to face Union Commonwealth next week at 1:30pm.
