Night Hawks Drop Doubleheader At Home

THOMASVILLE, GA  |  The Night Hawks concluded three doubleheaders in four days by hossting the visiting Toppers of Blue Mountain Christian University, on Saturday, at Armory Field.

Blue Mountain 5, Thomas 3 (Game One)

The Toppers hit the Blue Mountain would open the scoring, in game one, with three runs in the 3rd inning and an additional two runs in 6th inning.

The Night Hawks would atempt to rally, in the bottom of the 6th inning.  Grace Hodges would lead off the inning with a double to right-center.  Ansley Eason would knock a ball, just over the first-baseman's head, to score Hodges from 2nd base.  Jaelynn Vialpando would hit a single to left field, to set up 1st base and 2nd base.  AnnMarie McAfee would send a double, to the left-field wall, to score Eason.  Kristen Stellar would hit a grounder to the shortstop, to score Lauren Hicks, who pinch ran for Vialpando.  Thomas would trail 5-3, entering the 7th inning.

Despite Hailie Stewart leading off the 7th inning with a walk, back-to-back fielders choice, to the pitcher, and a ground out to the 3rd baseman, would end the Night hawks hope for a comeback.

Grace Hodges would collect two hits in the game, to lead the Night Hawks.

Blue Mountain 7, Thomas 5 (Game Two)

Thomas would score first, and score often, to open up the back-half of the doubleheader.  In the bottom of the 1st inning, Averie Sheppard would draw a bases-on-balls to open the inning.  Sheppard would promptly steal 2nd base, her 19th on the season, in 20 attempts.  Grace Hodges would hit a single to bring Sheppard home.  Hodges would gain 2nd base, on the throw to the plate.  Ansley Eason would get an infield single, to move Hodges to 3rd base.  Eason would steal 2nd base.  AnnMarie McAfee would knock a double to the right-center wall, to collect the two RBIs.  McAfee would eventually score on a Ashton Lewis single.  Thomas would own a 4-0 lead, entering the 2nd inning.

Blue Mountain would fight back to tie the score in the 4th inning.  The Toppers would take the lead in the 5th inning.  Blue Mountain would then add a pair of, all important, insurance runs in the 7th inning.

Thomas would not go down without a fight.  With two outs, Kennedy Hardy would knock a ball down the right field line, that would be good for a stand-up double.  Maggie Colgan would pinch-run for Hardy.  Colgan would score, when McAfee would get her second double, of the game, to keep the inning alive.  Unfortunately, a hot-shot to the 3rd baseman, by Kristen Stellar would be fielded cleanly, and thrown across the diamond, to first base, to end the Thomas hopes of a comeback.

AnnMarie McAfee would go 2/3 in the game, scoring one run, and collecting two RBIs.  Kennedy Hardy would also have two hits, in the contest.  Averie Sheppard would have a double and a stolen base, in the game.  Ansley Eason would also steal a base.

The Thomas game scheduled for Tuesday, at the College of Coastal Georgia, as a make-up from the game originally scheduled February 23, will not be played.  The Night Hawks will step away from SSAC competition, on Saturday, and face Georgia Gwinnett, in Lawrenceville, GA.  The Night Hawks will then travel to William Carey, the following Monday, to make up a SSAC contest from March 22.  For up-to-date information on this game and other TU Athletics, visit http://www.TUNightHawks.com.
