MONTGOMERY, Ala.- In another must win SSAC game, Thomas soared by the Faulkner Eagles on Saturday afternoon.
The Night Hawks struck fast as
Kaitlyn Herb picked up right where she left off against Point, scoring the opening goal off of a perfect cross from
Pearl Mortimer 40 seconds into the match to go up 1-0 early. From there, Thomas kept Faulkner at bay by pairing a steady defense with an aggressive attack. Herb struck again in the 28th minute, off of a brilliant pass from
Sasha Manders to increase the margin by two. The Eagles tried to respond but
Emily Lamoreaux continued being the anchor she is between the sticks, frustrating the Faulkner attack heading into the half.
The second half saw more of the same as the Thomas attack continued to get give the Faulkner defense fits early. The Eagles caught a break with a foul in the box to give Ainsley Lockwood a penalty kick which skated by Lamoreaux to bring the deficit down to 1. Right as Faulkner began to gain some momentum, the Night Hawks answered back with a
Jarica Lawrence header set up by an
Ali Baca pass to go up 3-1 in the 78th minute. The goal was Lawrence's first of the season. However, another foul in the box awarded another penalty kick for the Eagles, resulting in a second goal for Faulkner in the 83rd minute. Quickly, the Eagles tried to equalize but Thomas stood firm to win 3-2.
The win places Thomas in seventh place in the SSAC standings, keeping the Night Hawks in tournament contention.
The next game for Thomas will be on the road against Middle Georgia State on Thursday, October 17 at 5:30 PM
