On Saturday, the Thomas Night Hawks (22-20, 11-13) secured a position in the Sun Conference Softball Tournament, May 4-6 in Clearwater, FL, with their split in a doubleheader with Warner. The Night Hawks won game one by a score of 2-1, but dropped game two, by a score of 4-2. The Night Hawks will be no higher than the fifth seed in upcoming tournament.
Thomas could be the sixth seed, as they have completed conference play, while all other members will play a series next weekend. Warner (18-23, 9-12), who trails Thomas in the standings and currently sit in the sixth position, can earn the 5th spot by winning two of three games versus Webber International next weekend. By winning those games, Warner would tie Thomas' conference record, but the Royals own the tie-breaker, due to taking two of three games this weekend.
Game One
Thomas had to come from behind for the victory in this one. Trailing 1-0 entering the 6th inning, Addison Mauldin reached base via a double to right center field. Mauldin would score on a Royal error on a
Kennedy Hardy squeeze attempt.
Thomas would add the winning run in the 7th inning, when Grade Hodges led off the inning with a double.
Holly Campbell would single to right field to score Hodges. Thomas would hold on for the 2-1 victory.
Game Two
Thomas would score first. In the 3rd inning,
Megan Monk would draw a one-out walk. After Monk stole 2nd base, Campbell would single to left field to score Monk. Warner would go on to tie the score in the bottom half of the inning, and take the lead in the 6th inning by adding three additional runs.
Averie Shepard would triple to left center field with one out. She would score on a Campbell sacrifice fly. The Night Hawks were unable to add any additional runs, losing 4-2.
