Night Hawks Win Doubleheader

A.D Drew | Director of Athletic Communications

Thomas sent the Trinity Eagles back to Jacksonville, FL with two losses in their doubleheader.  During the day portion, the Night Hawks put 14 runs on the boards, with an equal amount of hits, to secure the decisive victory.  In the night game, the Night Hawks had half of the hits of game one, with fewer runs, but ultimately, garnered the victory in extra innings.  The two games were scheduled as seven inning matches.

Game One

The Night Hawks scored early and scored often against the Trinity Eagles.  Thomas scored in five of the six innings that they batted in during the seven inning affair, and had a runner on base in each inning.  Matthew Delay, Jr. led off the first inning with a double.  He would also open up the scoring for the day. Kaiden Bastian, Bradley Fleenor, and Jean Pool Checo also scored in the inning.

Luis Torres returned to action and got his first hit of the season in the third inning, with a single (he walked in his first at bat in the first inning).  He would later score, along with six other Night Hawks, in the inning, all with no outs.  The highlight of the inning would be Delay knocking a Grand Slam for his fourth homerun of the season.

The Night Hawks would score at least one run in their three at bats.  Torres would hit triples in the fourth and sixth innings, and would finish the day 3-for-3, with two runs scored, and a walk. Fleenor would hit a two-run homerun in the fifth inning.  Checo would finish a perfect 2-for-2 on the day, with a double, before being subbed out.

Game Two

The Night Hawks opened the nightcap by putting a crooked number on the board in the first inning, powered by Fleenor's second homerun of the day, another two-run shot.  But the bats quickly cooled off, as that would be the only hit until the 3rd inning.

Trinity would take the lead, 3-2, in the 4th inning, set up by an error on a sacrifice bunt by the Eagles.  Trinity would tack on another run in the 5th on a squeeze play to increase their lead, 4-2.

The Night Hawks would retake the lead in the 5th inning when Cam Williams scored an unearned run, and Luis Rodriquez-Gallo would hit a two-run homerun, the team's fourth homerun of the doubleheader.  Thomas would own a slim 5-4 lead, entering the 6th inning.  Trinity would tie the score in the 6th inning on a two-out single to center field.

The game would remained tied after the scheduled 7 innings, forcing extra innings.  In the bottom of the 8th, Gabe Tafelski would lead off the inning by striking out, but a wild pitch on the third strike would allow Tafelski to reach first base.  Michael Sowers would draw a walk.  After a failed sacrifice bunt, a wild pitch to Delay moved the runner up to second and third base.  Delay was intentionally walked at that point, setting up Kaiden Bastian's game-winning RBI with a single to center field, for the walk off victory.

The Night Hawks will next be in action on Friday, April 14 and Saturday, April 15 in a Sun Conference matchup versus Keiser.  The Friday doubleheader will begin at 1pm, with the second game beginning at approximately 4pm.  The Saturday matinee is scheduled to begin at 1pm.
