The Thomas University Nigh Hawks completed the sweep of the Ave Maria Gyrenes with an extra-inning effort at Armory Field. Â The Night Hawks defeated the Gyrenes 3-2 in eight innings, before a sparse crowd on an overcast day. Â
The Night Hawks scored there three runs on six hits, powered by Avery Shepard's three-for-three effort hitting and two runs scored. Â
Holly Campbell collected two hits in her three at bats, along with all three RBIs. Â
Grace Hodges had the other hit for TU. Â Leanne Lane pitched six innings, giving up two runs on five hits. Â
Taylor Currie picked up the victory by pitching two scoreless and hitless innings. Â
How It Happened
Thomas' Avery Shepard led off the bottom of the first inning with a triple. Â
Holly Campbell hit a sacrifice fly to left field for the first run of the day.  Ave Maria answered the next inning as Marisa Michi led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  After Michi advanced to third on a error, she scored on a Hailee Howe sacrifice fly.
The Night Hawks plated another run in the third when Shepard got a two-out triple and then scored on Campbell's double.  The 2-1 lead would hold until the sixth inning when the Gyrenes' Ryanne Saluter singled to open the inning.  Ashley Nelson followed with a double, placing runners on second and third.  A wild pitch to the next batter, Michi, allowed Saluter to score to tied the game at two.Â
The game would go to extra innings with the international tie-breaker system, placing Holly Stewart on second base. Â
Faith Graben pinch-ran for Stewart. Â Graben advanced to third on an
Elizabeth Soto groundout to the second baseman. Â After a Shepard walk,
Holly Campbell singled in the game-winning run.
With the sweep, Thomas jumps from eighth in the conference, coming into the series, to fifth place. Â The Night Hawks will face fourth-place Keiser, this weekend at Armory Field. Â The three-game series is scheduled to begin on Friday, with a doubleheader at 1pm and 3pm, and the series closes out on Saturday with a scheduled noon start.
