TU Falls to WIU in Sun Conference Action

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University softball team lost a pair of Sun Conference games to Webber International University Friday at Armory Field, falling 2-1 in the first game and 4-1 in the second outing.
 
The Night Hawks are now 11-14 overall and 2-6 in the Sun Conference.
 
TU and WIU will play the final game of the three-game series on Saturday at noon at Armory Field.
 
Game One
WIU hit a solo home run in the second to take the early lead, then added one more run in the top of the fifth.
 
All three of TU's hits came in the final inning.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, Averie Sheppard hit a leadoff single, then Holly Campbell followed with a base hit to left. Jaelynn Vialpando hit a pop up for the first out. Adreanna Killingsworth's single plated Sheppard, and advanced Campbell to second. TU was unable to tie the game as Addyson Mauldin flew out to left and AnnMarie McAfee struck out looking to end the game.
 
Amber Griffin pitched the first 4.0 innings, giving up four hits and walking three, allowing two runs, and striking out three.
 
Game Two
Webber International again scored first, plating two in the second inning.
 
With one out in the fifth, Sarah Culp reached on an error, Hailie Stewart drew a walk and Briana Boggs singled to load the bases. Averie Sheppard hit an RBI single to cut the WIU lead in half, but Stewart was thrown out at third on the play, then Holly Campbell grounded out to end the inning with two Night Hawks left on base.
 
WIU added two runs in the top of the sixth from three hits and TU was unable to catch up in the final two at-bats, falling 4-1.
 
Addyson Mauldin went 2-for-2 with a double and drew a walk to lead the Night Hawks offensively.
 
In the circle, Leanne Lain struck out five in her 6.0 innings, allowing four runs from six hits and two walks.
