Thomas Plates Seven Late to Push Past FMU

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University baseball team scored seven runs in its final two innings to take the 9-2 win over Florida Memorial in the first game of a double header at Varnedoe Stadium Friday. The Night Hawks lost the second game, 6-2.
 
Thomas will face FMU in the rubber match on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Varnedoe Stadium.
 
Game One
After three scoreless innings, Thomas scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth off an RBI double from Bradley Fleenor and an RBI single from Jean Pool Checo.
 
FMU plated one run in the top of the fifth, but with two outs in the seventh, Thomas scored four runs, then added three more in the eighth to take the 9-1 lead.
 
In the seventh, Matthew Delay, Jr. hit a leadoff single, then Khadin Bastian was called out on batter's interference and Cam Williams flied out to right field. With two outs, TU got back-to-back RBI doubles from Luis Rodriguez-Gallo and Fleenor. Pinch hitter Nick Talpa connected on a base hit, then a wild pitch plated Fleenor and advanced Talpa to second. An RBI single from Checo allowed Talpa to score and put the Night Hawks up 6-1.
 
With one out in the bottom of the eighth, TU loaded the bases with singles from Delay and Bastian and a drawn walk from Cam Williams. After a pitching change from FMU, Gallo hit a sac fly to left to score the first run of the inning. Fleenor then walked to reload the bases. All runners advanced on a passed ball, then again on a wild pitch to scored two more runs and go ahead 9-1.
 
FMU hit a solo home run with one out in the top of the ninth, but Savian Loor struck out the final two batters to end the game.
 
Checo was 3-for-4 with two RBI and Delay had three hits and scored twice. Gallo and Fleenor each had a pair of hits and two RBI.
 
Riley Fisher earned the win on the mound, striking out four while allowing one run from four hits and two walks in 5.0 innings.
 
 
Game Two
The Night Hawks hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first, then FMU plated one in the third and one in the fifth to take the 2-1 lead. The Lions then scored one in the eighth and three in the ninth to go ahead 6-1 heading into the final frame. Thomas was able to score one run in the bottom of the ninth, but stranded a pair of runners to take the 6-2 loss.
 
Six Night Hawks each had one hit for TU, including a home run from Cam Williams, his second of the season, and a double from both Jean Pool Checo and Bradley Fleenor. Checo has six doubles this season, and Fleenor has tagged eight.
 
AJ Wydra struck out seven in his 7.0 inning start, but allowed seven hits and three runs, two earned. Jacob Pino came in for the final 2.0 innings, scattering four hits while allowing three earned runs and striking out one.
