TU Splits Sun Conference Opener

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University softball team split with College of Coastal Georgia on Saturday, falling 5-1 in the first game, then winning the second, 4-3, in Sun Conference action at Armory Field.
 
Thomas (8-9, 1-1 Sun Conference) and CCG will play the rubber match Sunday at 11 a.m. at Armory Field.
 
 
Game One
Jaelynn Vialpando connected on a solo home run in the second inning to give Thomas the 1-0 lead, but Coastal Georgia plated one in the fourth, and a pair of runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to earn the 5-1 victory.
 
Averie Sheppard was 2-for-3 at the plate for TU.
 
The TU defense left 13 Mariner runners stranded in the game.
 
Amber Griffin pitched a complete game for Thomas, striking out three but allowing five runs, four earned, from 10 hits and five walks.
 
 
Game Two
With two outs in the bottom of the first, Addyson Mauldin drew a walk then scored on a double from Killingsworth. CCG countered with a solo homer in the second.
 
In the third, Sheppard hit a leadoff single, then advanced on a sac bunt by Holly Campbell. Mauldin drew a walk to get on base in time for Killingsworth to hit an RBI single. After a pitching change, Briana Boggs plated two with a double to put TU ahead 4-1.
 
Coastal Georgia scored a pair of runs in the fourth, but TU forced the final two batters of the inning into a ground out and a pop out, holding the Mariner runner on third and maintaining a one-run TU lead.
 
Both teams were held scoreless in the final three innings, giving Thomas the 4-3 win.
 
Killingsworth was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run scored while Emma Alley and Grace Hodges were both 2-for-3.
 
Leanna Lain and Dale Elmore combined to strike out six and allow just one earned run in the Night Hawks victory. Lain started the game, striking out three while allowing just one earned run, three total, from four hits in 3.1 innings. Elmore held CCG scoreless in 3.2 innings.
