Night Hawks’ Seventh-Inning Rally Falls Short at MGSU

COCHRAN, Ga. – The Thomas University softball team lost a pair of games at Middle Georgia State University on Saturday, falling 12-2 in the first game and 7-6 in the second outing, despite a three-run rally in the top of the seventh inning.
 
The Night Hawks are back in action March 3-5 at the Gulf Shores Invitational Tournament in Alabama. TU faces St. Xavier on Friday at 6:30 p.m. to begin the five-game event.
 
Game One
After falling behind 9-0 through three innings, Ava Nunez connected on a two-run homer in the fourth to plate Thomas' only two runs of the game.
 
Adreana Killingsworth and Elizabeth Soto also had a hit in the game.
 
Five pitchers took the mound for Thomas. Amber Griffin started the game and took the loss after allowing four runs from four hits in 1.2 innings.
 
 
Game Two
The Night Hawks rattled the bats in the second game, collecting 12 hits, but came up short, 7-6, despite a three-run rally in the seventh.
 
Down 5-3 heading into the final inning, Thomas plated three runs to take the 6-5 lead. Holly Campbell hit a leadoff single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Addyson Mauldin grounded out, Adreanna Killingsworth hit an RBI-single to draw the score within one. Ava Nunez drew a walk then both runners advanced as Briana Boggs put down a sac bunt. AnnMarie McAfee gave TU a one-run lead with a base hit that plated a pair of runs.
 
Night Hawk pitcher Leanne Lain forced the first two Knight batters into infield ground outs. MGSU then connected on a single, drew a walk and hit a two-RBI double to take home the win.
 
Averie Sheppard, Campbell and Killingsworth each connected on a pair of hits in the game. Emma Alley blasted her first home run of the season,  a solo shot in the second inning.
 
In 6.2 innings, Lain struck out one and walked three while allowing seven runs – six earned – from 10 hits.
