TU Sweeps Fort Lauderdale

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University baseball team swept the University of Fort Lauderdale in three games this weekend, downing the Eagles 6-2 on Friday, then winning the double header by scores of 13-0 and 9-6, on Saturday at Varnedoe Stadium.
 
Next weekend the Night Hawks host Madonna University in a four-game set. Friday's double header begins at noon and first pitch for Saturday's double header is at 1 p.m. at Varnedoe Stadium.
 
Game One
In the first of two games on Saturday, the Night Hawks downed the Eagles 13-0.
 
Pitchers AJ Wydra and Donavan Kim combined for the seven-inning shutout. Wydra earned the win, allowing just three hits, walking one and striking out two in 6.0 innings. Kim struck out one and allowed two hits in 1.0 inning.
 
Bradley Fleenor was 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored while Kason Buie went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Luis Rodriguez-Gallo connected on a two-run double, his second double of the season.
 
 
Game Two
 
Matthew Delay, Jr. and Khadin Bastian each had a pair of hits, two RBI and scored twice for the Night Hawks. Bastian, Kason Buie and Cam Williams each tagged a double in the game.
 
Thomas scored first as Luis Rodriguez-Gallo hit a sac fly to right, plating Delay, Jr. in the bottom of the first inning. Fort Lauderdale tied the game in the second, scoring on a wild pitch.
 
The Night Hawks plated six in the bottom of the second inning from four hits and one error. Bastian drew a leadoff walk, then scored on a double from Buie. Michael Sowers then reached on a fielding error that allowed Buie to advance to third. The Eagles catcher then made an error, allowing Buie to score. A sac bunt from Brooks Rikeman moved Sowers to third, then he scored on a base hit from Delay. Jean Pool Checo drew a walk, then after Williams hit an infield pop up for the second out, Gallo hit an RBI single. Bradley Fleenor then drew a walk to load the bases before Bastian hit a two-run double.
 
UFTL scored four runs over the next three innings to draw the score to 7-5, but Thomas added two more in the bottom of the fifth to extend its lead to 9-5.
 
Bastian singled, then stole second and scored on a fielding error. After a ground out from Buie, Sowers struck out swinging, but reached first on a wild pitch. Sowers advanced to second on a ground out from Rikeman, then Delay hit an RBI single to plate Sowers and put the Night Hawks ahead by four.
 
Fort Lauderdale scored one final run in the top of the sixth, but TU held on to take the 9-6 victory.
 
Dustin Letchworth started the game on the hill, allowing one run from three hits in 1.2 innings before reliever Savian Loor took the mound. Loor earned the win after striking out three, but giving up three runs – two earned – from four hits in 2.1 innings.
