Senior Day Dubs: TU Upsets Gyrenes

THOMASVILLE, GA- It was a full day of smiles, laughs and of course a huge win for the Thomas University Women's Soccer team Saturday afternoon against the Gyrenes on Senior Day.

The Night Hawks (7-3-3, 2-1-2)  started off with a unique lineup with every Senior starting, but the Gyrenes (4-6-4, 1–4-1) looked past that as Ave Maria came into the first half firing several shots in hopes of a lead early in the game. Junior Janae Scott decided to make a strong statement for the Green and White as the Forward answered the first goal for the Night Hawks that was assisted by Senior Analeice Wilkes in the 38th minute. The morale continued to build very quickly for Thomas, within two minutes Freshman Ali Baca built the lead with an assist by Junior Aquene Tollefson. The Gyrenes could not find an answer heading into the half.

In the second half of the contest, Ave Maria struggled to find the back of the net as the Night Hawks continued to take advantage of the mistakes from the Gyrenes. Eventually the game began to get silent as both sides tried to control the pace of the second half until Analeice Wilkes made the game 3-0. The Gyrenes finally found an answer to Thomas' defense with a goal from Liz Wolf in the 79th minute, as Ave tried to battle back from a two goal deficit. Thomas remained calm and controlled the pace of the game as time continued to run down.

In total, Ave Maria had a total of 14 shots with five on goal. The Gyrenes also had eight saves. Thomas controlled the category of shots with 23 and eleven on goal. The Night Hawks also had four saves and corner kicks.

WHAT'S NEXT:  Thomas will have a few days to rest and get ready to hit the road for their next SUN matchup against Florida Memorial. Kick off is set for 7pm on Thursday in Miami Gardens, Fla.
