THOMASVILLE, Ga -- The Thomas University Men's Soccer Team is gearing up for its home opener against Middle Georgia State University Wednesday, September 8th, at 2 PM. The Night Hawks enter the contest one week removed from action, after narrowly escaping an overtime thriller in Montgomery, Alabama.
In that contest, Thomas faced Faulkner University in a match that displayed twelve cards, three ejections, two rain delays, and 7 goals.
After initially starting the contest, lightning delayed continuation for nearly two hours before Thomas came out on top 4-3 in the double overtime victory.
A standout performance from Regan McLaren proved to be too much to handle as the Freshman forward got involved with all four of TU's goals.
Starting in the sixth minute, McLaren provided an assist on the first goal, before instantly scoring on a break again in the 7th minute. The second half provided more of the same, as McLaren struck from the penalty spot to score his second of the contest. Lastly, in the 103rd minute, McLaren's cross found Junior midfielder Jack Vikström who tallied the elusive golden goal.
Middle Georgia enters Wednesday's contest 0-4, after an early goal for St. Andrews proved to be just enough to outlast the Knights 1-0 on Saturday, September 4th.
Despite the loss, the Knights enter this week's contest with high exceptions after a positive season last year led the team to the Southern States Athletic Conference playoffs.
The struggling Knights have been unable to find offensive power in the young season, and are currently being outshot by opponents 48-28. The Knights have had three different keepers start in goal, providing 4.5 saves per contest.
Wednesday's matchup against the Knights at TU Soccer Complex will be TU's first meeting against MGA since 2017.
