ALBANY, Ga. – The Thomas University Women's soccer team saw many close chances for a plethora of scores but managed to hang on for a 1-0 win over Albany State Wednesday night at the ASU Soccer Complex.
There was a sizable difference in shots taken for each side, as TU (4-3) outshot the Golden Rams 21-8. Sophomore
Kayley Smith led the Green & White with five shots, while Juniors
Analeice Wilkes and
Payton Walton tallied four apiece. Sophomore Goalkeeper Trinity Chastain recorded her second shutout of the season, adding one save to her total.
TU also saw chances nullified with 10 offsides calls.
The lone score of the match came in the 35th minute when the Night Hawks capitalized off an offsides transition, in which Wilkes recorded her third goal of the season off a setup from Graduate
Taylor Hults.
As the wind's breeze picked up in the second half, ASU (1-5) had a golden (no pun intended) opportunity to tie the contest after a Night Hawk foul set up Thuto Ramafifi for the penalty kick. Mother Nature had other ideas, however, as the wind took Ramafifi's kick five yards wide of the left post. ASU's leading scorer had a chance to redeem the missed penalty kick on an odd-man rush in the 86th minute, but also saw the shot sail wide. In the end, Thomas managed to keep Albany State in check to preserve its third, straight road win of Fall 2021.
While the Night Hawks picked up their fourth win of the season, Head Coach
Julie Orlowski knows TU's team has yet to unleash its full potential. "The sign of a good team is not playing well and getting a result. Our defense played well to get the shutout; our back line is coming together. We have some work to do to be ready for conference play."
