Tale of Two Halves: Night Hawks Lose to Middle Georgia

THOMASVILLE, GA — The Thomas University women's basketball team fell 63-53 in a non-conference contest against Middle Georgia on Saturday afternoon.

The weekend contest proved to be a tale of two halves, as the Night Hawks (1-4, 1-0 SUN) jumped out to a first half 12-point lead before ultimately allowing the Knights (3-0) from Middle Georgia back into the game in the second half.

To start the game, both teams battled as there were four lead changes in the hard-fought first quarter. Thomas eventually came out on top 18-13 thanks to a solid team effort with five different scorers after ten minutes of play.

Second quarter action saw the Night Hawks explode on the offensive end, scoring twenty-two points in the second period alone, extending the lead to eleven at halftime. The team's forty point half was fueled thanks to a season-high eleven assists in the first half. Heading to intermission, Graduate student Destiny Reed led all scorers with ten.

In the second half, the Night Hawk offense came to a complete halt, as a rejuvenated Knights' defense held TU to five total points in the third quarter, eliminating the gap and tying the contest at 45 apiece heading into the final period of action.

The offensive woes continued for Thomas into the fourth, as the team would again be held to single digits, losing the lead at the beginning of the final period, 47-45. The Night Hawks shot an abysmal 18% from long range in the contest, fueling transition baskets for the Knights helping the team from Cochran, Ga. take the win improving to 3-0 on the season.

In the end, the Knights from Middle Georgia turned an eleven point deficit at halftime into a ten point 63-53 win in the Rose City. Junior guard Destanee Wright led all scorers in the contest, scoring 17 points fueling the second-half comeback.

The second half nightmare saw the Night Hawks turn 55% shooting in the first half into 21% shooting in the second, as the team went the entire second half of action without hitting a 3-ptr. shooting 3-15 from behind-the-arc for the game.

Graduate student Destiny Reed led all scorers for TU with 12 points and seven boards, as Freshman Jaleigh Miller continued to score the basketball off the bench, delivering eleven points in her 25 minutes. Despite the offensive outputs, inefficiency down the stretch saw the Night Hawks cough up the lead as both Miller and Reed shot a combined 2-11 for four total points in the second half.

Up next, the Night Hawks will travel to Boca Raton, Fla. for an exhibition contest against DII opponent Lynn University on Monday, November 15th at 5:00 p.m. Fans can follow along with the contest by accessing the links below.
