PK Lifts Thomas to Second SUN Win

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University Women's soccer team appeared to be in a deadlock with Warner University Thursday night, but a good penalty kick from Junior Analeice Wilkes was all the Night Hawks needed in a 1-0 win over the Royals Thursday evening at TU Soccer Complex.

The contest saw limited action from both sides, as TU (7-9, 2-6 TSC) only outshot the Royals (3-7-2, 1-6-1 SUN) by seven shots (13-6).   Sophomore Goalkeeper Emily Lamoreaux got the starting nod, recording her second shutout of Fall 2021 with two saves.

For the first 32 minutes of action, it was mostly Graduate Taylor Hults that was taking chances, landing three of Thomas' first four shots.

The Green & White caught a rare break in the 41st minute when Wilkes beamed a shot towards net that saw Warner's Sophia Raby in the way and in the keeper's box, forcing the defender to shield herself which drew a handball foul leading to the match's lone penalty kick.  Right on cue, Wilkes capitalized in the bottom, back right corner of the net, giving the Leicester, England native her sixth goal of the season and TU the 1-0 lead.

Minutes later, Warner would have a golden chance to score the equalizing goal, but a 25-yard shot from Sara Machado hit the crossbar as Sophomore Jade Slaybaugh recovered the ball before WU's Kaylee Cooper could secure the rebound.

The second half was particularly mellow, only seeing a total of nine shots (five from the Night Hawks and four from the Royals, but TU made their shots count, including the team's own crossbar shot by Wilkes in the 66th minute.
