AVE MARIA, Fla. – Divine Intervention could not have been any crueler to the Thomas University Women's soccer team, as an Ave Maria 89th minute goal sunk the Night Hawks 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Gyrene Field.
TU (5-5, 0-2 SUN) totaled 16 shots on the day, its third-highest shot total on the season, compared to the 18 posted by Ave Maria (8-2, 2-0 SUN). Sophomore Goalkeeper
Emily Lamoreaux got the starting nod, recording a career-high 10 saves from the 12 shots on goal faced.
Thomas was able to get on the scoreboard first in the 11th minute, as a throw-in, a few headers and a few bounces led to Freshman
Raelin Lescher's first career goal to give the Night Hawks a 1-0 lead.
Approximately 12 minutes later, the Gyrenes produced the equalizer with an Emily Dalton goal set up by Chiara O'Keefe.
For most of the second half, neither side let up an inch. TU had an opportunity to retake the lead in the waning portion of the match when a bounce-back pass came to Sophomore
Kayley Smith, but the Pensacola, Fla. native's shot deflected off the cross bar and to the right. Moments later, AMU's attack was in full force, firing a pair of shots that were both saved by Lamoreaux.
In the end, however, the Holy Queen's team prevailed with a 34-yard shot from scoring leader Emily Dalton that gave the Gyrenes the 2-1 decision.
