THOMASVILLE, Ga. – Since February, the Thomas University Women's swimming team have waited and trained for another meet that would count towards qualifying for NAIA Nationals. The Night Hawks took a giant leap in the winning direction Saturday evening, decisively defeating Point University 130-32 to begin its 2021-22 season at the Butler-Mason YMCA.
Although TU ultimately came out on top, proceedings did not go exactly as anticipated. Thomas was initially scheduled to compete in a Tri-Meet, but a Salem University cancellation and a last minute arrangement changed plans, turning Saturday's contest into a dual meet with its rival from the West Georgia-Alabama border, when the Skyhawks agreed to come to Southwest Georgia. Additionally, the meet itself had a 45-minute delay before the 28-event meet began.
While plans may have shifted, the Night Hawks' performance was not. The Green & White participated in all 14 possible Women's events, with Thomas finishing first in all 14 relays. Senior
Hope McNair captured the 100-yard (0:56.94) and 200-yard freestyle titles (2:01.42) while fellow Senior
Chardonay Tophia won the 50-yard freestyle (0:26.56) and 100-yard Fly (1:06.44) events.
Freshman
Laura Garcia Zapater won her first NAIA head-to-head event in the 100-yard Breaststroke event, besting Point's Hayley Akbari with a time of 1:16.12.
RESULTS
The Night Hawks' next scheduled event is currently slated for November 2nd at South Georgia State College in dual meet fashion. The event is set to begin at 1 p.m.
