MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Thomas gave Florida Memorial a scare Thursday, clawing at the heels of the Lions keeping the contest to single digits, but a late scoring push by Florida Memorial clinched an 82-70 win for the Orange & Blue Thursday night at the Wellness Center.
Thomas (0-6, 0-6 TSC) saw good shooting throughout the game, capitalizing on 40% of its shots and 45.8 from long range. Senior
Alexis Powell led TU with 15 Points on the night. Sophomore Guard
Gabrielle Jester shot 50% from the field, including a 3-for-7 performance from outside the arc in her first game back from injury.
A breakdown of the game period-by-period:
1st Period (FMU 25, TU 21)
- Thomas shot 58.3% from the field, hitting both long-range attempts from downtown
- An early technical foul from FMU Junior Guard Keaynna Tolbert forced the Lions to regroup
- Senior Guard Alisha Clayton and Gabrielle Jester orchestrated a quick 7-0 scoring run midway through the period that saw TU's largest lead of the period (16-10)
2nd Period (FMU 46, TU 42)
- Both Thomas and Florida Memorial notched 21 points apiece
- Alexis Powell continued to stay hot, draining three 3-Ptrs. in the period
- FMU's Destiny Marin tallied eight points that ignited a 12-3 scoring run with 6:46 remaining, lasting three minutes
- The Hunter Green & White responded with their own scoring run (12-4) that began at the 3:18 mark and lasted 2:21
3rd Period (FMU 68, TU 59)
- TU's scoring was highlighted by Sophomore Guard Emiah Downie, who scored 11 points
- After an Alisha Clayton free throw put TU to within two (50-48) with 8:21 left, FMU's offensive attacked surged, outscoring the Hunter Green & White 16-8 over the course of five minutes and 16 seconds
4th Period (FMU 82, TU 70)
- The Lady Night Hawks started off firing, going on a quick 7-2 scoring to cut the deficit to 70-66
- The Lions took advantage of a tired TU team, outscoring Thomas 12-2 from 6:04 to 56 seconds remaining
