TU Wins Three at Gulf Shores Invite

GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Thomas University softball team went 3-1 at the Gulf Shores Invitational Tournament this weekend, defeating No. 6 Columbia College along the way. 

The Night Hawks took down No. 6 Columbia College, 5-0, then defeated William Woods University (Mo.), 6-4, and Freed-Hardeman University (Tenn.), 4-2. TU also lost, 2-1, to No. 18 William Carey University (Miss.). 

Thomas (10-7), next faces Webber International University (Fla.) in Sun Conference action March 11 in Babson Park, Fla. 


Game One
Thomas scored one in the fourth, then piled on four more in the fifth to take the 5-0 win over No. 6 Columbia (Mo.) Friday afternoon. Sheala Brown earned the complete game shutout victory, allowing just four hits and striking out three. Holly Campbell was 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBI, and Adreanna Killingsworth also tagged a two-run double. 

Game Two
Thomas plated two in the top of the first, but William Woods scored three in the first and one in the second to take the early lead. The Night Hawks added two in the fifth and a pair in the sixth to earn the 6-4 victory. Holly Campbell went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Makana Pember, Chauntivia Cliatt and Hallie Stewart also had a pair of hits for TU. Rebecca Boesen picked up the win, striking out five while allowing just three hits in 3.0 innings of relief. 

Game Three
No. 18 William Carey scored one in the first and Thomas tied the game in the top of the fourth, but WCU took the game with a walk off single to left in the bottom of the seventh. Jaelynn Vailpando went 2-for-3 and swiped one base. In 4.0 innings of relief Larran Carter struck out four, but allowed one unearned run from six hits and a pair of walks to take the loss. 

Game Four
After Freed-Hardeman scored one in the top of the first, Thomas knotted the score in the third. FHU went ahead with one in the fourth, but Thomas plated three in the sixth to finish the tournament with a 4-2 win. Cliatt went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Emily Bowne allowed one run from three hits and two walks while striking out two in 3.0 innings of relief to pick up the win.
