BABSON PARK, Fla. – The Thomas University softball team fell 3-0 in the first game, then defeated Webber International University, 5-4 in eight innings Wednesday night at Nancy Nichols Field.
Thomas improves to 11-8 overall and starts Sun Conference play 1-1. Webber International, which is receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25, is now 18-6.
The Night Hawks next host No. 25 Warner University (Fla.) in a doubleheader at Armory Field on March 14.
Game One
WIU defeated Thomas with two home runs in the first game, a two run shot in the fifth and a solo homer in the sixth to take the 3-0 win.
TU tagged just two hits, one each from
Jaelynn Vialpando and
Michaela Farr.
Corryne Diaz drew a pair of walks.
On the mound,
Rebecca Boesen struck out seven, but allowed three runs from seven hits in 6.0 innings.
Game Two
WIU led, 3-0 after four innings, but Thomas plated two in the fifth and a pair in the sixth to take the lead. WIU answered with one in the seventh, then TU scored one in the eighth to earn the 5-4 victory.
In the top of the eighth,
Holly Campbell was placed on second base to start the inning.
Hailie Stewart put down a sac bunt, moving Campbell to third, then Vailpando sent a sac fly to left, plating the game-winning run.
The Night Hawk defense held WIU without a run in the bottom of the eighth, stranding a Warrior runner on second base.
West was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI while Diaz also tagged a pair of hits and collected an RBI.
Sheala Brown got the start on the mound (5.0 IP, 4R, 3ER, 6H, 1K), then
Larran Carter came in for 1.0 inning of relief. Boesen closed the game and picked up the win after striking out three and no-hitting WIU in 2.0 innings.
