Lady Night Hawks Fall Short to Seahawks in TSC Slugfest

Angelo Pontello | Sports Information Director | @apontello44

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – TU once again went toe-to-toe with a TSC opponent with only six active players, but missed 3-Pointers and poor shooting at the free-throw line doomed the Lady Night Hawks Saturday afternoon, falling to Keiser 68-62.

The Hunter Green & White (0-4, 0-4 TSC) shot 37% from the field, but converted just 18,2% of shots outside the arch.  The Lady Night Hawks converted 14 of 26 (53.8%) shots from the charity stripe.

The Lady Night Hawks began the game firing on all cylinders, jumping out to a 12-4 lead that was highlighted by Senior Forward Destiny Reed.  Midway through the first period, TU fell into a lull, paving the way for a 12-0 Keiser run, giving the Seahawks their first lead at the 3:15 mark.  Both teams exchanged baskets for the remainder of the period, with Keiser leading 21-17.  Keiser's Emily Patton was responsible for 13 of those points.

The Hunter Green & White made sure to focus on Patton in Period 2, limiting the Guard to three points.  Turnovers, however, became the new issue for the Lady Night Hawks, racking up six in the period.  Three different scoring droughts of at least one minute and 30 seconds allowed TU to stay in the game; down 26-19, the Lady Night Hawks capitalized on a good jumper from Sophomore Guard Emiah Downie, igniting a 10-2 scoring run that finished with a made free throw by Sophomore Guard Kevena Henry that gave TU the lead heading into halftime 29-28.

After scoring a quick, five points in the first 1:14, Thomas struggled to score the rest of third period, accumulating another five points for a total of ten points in the period.  After Keiser retook the lead (40-39) at the 4:48 mark with an Antigonie Sanabria 3-Pointer, the Seahawks joined the Lady Night Hawks in scoring woes, only converting two baskets the rest of the quarter.  TU only trailed 44-39 heading into the final quarter.  TU finished the quarter 1-for-8 from the free throw line.

Thomas continued its Ironman push into the final period, cutting Keiser's lead to three (52-49) at the 6:02 mark with a pair of Destiny Reed-free throws.  With a deep bench, Keiser took advantage of a tired Lady Night Hawk squad, bursting out to a 9-0 scoring run in the course of one minute and 42 seconds.  The scoring push would prove to be just enough for the Seahawks to maintain the lead for the rest of the game.

TU would not go down easily, as the Lady Night Hawks finished the game outscoring Keiser 11-5 in the final two minutes.  The scoring push came too late, however, as the Keiser Seahawks had just enough to prevail with the 68-62 win.

Despite the loss, Destiny Reed had a big scoring day with 24 Points and seven rebounds, shooting 60% from the field.

Thomas hits the road Wednesday for a friendly exhibition against NCAA Division I Florida International University. Tipoff is scheduled for noon.
