LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Thomas University senior
Gavin Rochford-Smith netted a pair of goals in the Night Hawks' 4-3 loss to Cumberland University in the Labor Day Grizzly Classic.
Both Thomas and CU are receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches Preseason Top 25 Poll.
Rochford-Smith attempted three shots, all on goal, and converted on two.
Cumberland took a 3-0 lead in the first half, then added a fourth goal with 15 minutes remaining in the match. Thomas scored three goals in the final 10 minutes of regulation, but ran out of time, allowing CU to take the 4-3 win.
Rochford-Smith's first goal was a free kick inside the right post with 9:52 remaining in the match. Three minutes later,
Diego Azar send a long cross from the left side into the box, then
Mateo Arbelaez beat the keeper to the left side for the second goal.
Thomas' final goal was a penalty kick by Rochford-Smith with 4:14 left in the match. The Night Hawks attempted a shot and had a corner kick in the remaining minutes, but were unable to convert.
TU returns to the pitch Sept. 2 to face No. 12 Georgia Gwinnett College at noon in the Labor Day Grizzly Classic in Lawrenceville, Ga.
