THOMASVILLE, Ga. – Thomas University scored four runs in the sixth to earn a 4-1 win over No. 4 Georgia Gwinnett College Friday evening at Varnedoe Stadium.
TU has defeated three ranked teams this season, including the Grizzlies, No. 4 Faulkner University and No. 24 Keiser University.
The Night Hawks are 11-1 in their last 12 games, with the only loss to No. 4 Faulkner.
After five and a half scoreless innings on Friday, Thomas plated four runs from two hits in the bottom of the sixth.
Chance Carter earned the win with three strikeouts and no runs allowed from four hits in 7.0 innings.
Hassan Westbrook picked up the save with one strikeout and no hits in 1.0 inning.
With one out in the frame,
Landon Boyette sent a solo shot over the wall. Then
Luis Martinez and
Chase Hinson each drew full-count walks. Designated hitter
Brandon Paez knocked an RBI double, then
Jake Bryan grounded out to the shortstop, plating another TU run. With Paez on third,
Levi O'Steen took a walk and both players advanced on a wild pitch, giving Thomas the 4-0 lead.
Georgia Gwinnett connected on a leadoff home run in the top of the ninth but could not score again.
Due to impending weather, Thomas and Georgia Gwinnett will play a doubleheader on Saturday instead of one game each on Saturday and Sunday, as previously scheduled. First pitch on Saturday is 1 p.m., and the second game will follow immediately after the first.
