Thomas Collects 22 Hits in Pair of Wins at AMU

AVE MARIA, Fla. – Thomas University softball collected 11 hits in each of its wins over Ave Maria University Saturday afternoon at the AMU Softball Field. The Night Hawks won the first game, 8-7, then took the second, 11-1. 

With the two wins, the Night Hawks move into second place in the Sun Conference with a 4-2 mark in the league. TU is 10-12 overall this season. Ave Maria falls to 10-18, 1-3. 

Thomas returns to its home field Wednesday, March 20 at 1 p.m., to play league-leading RV Webber International (15-5, 4-0) in a Sun Conference doubleheader at Armory Field. 

Game One
Ave Maria jumped out to a 4-0 lead after scoring two runs in each of the first two innings, but Thomas scored four runs from four hits in the fourth to tie the game. Each team plated three in the fifth, then TU connected on a double and a single to score the game-winning run in the top of the seventh. 

The Night Hawks tagged seven doubles as a team, with two from both left fielder Gaby Mora and third baseman Corryne Diaz, who was 3-for-4 with two RBI. 

Pitchers Sheala Brown (4) and Emily Bowne (3) combined to strike out seven batters. Brown started the game, allowing seven runs from nine hits in 4.2 innings, then Margarita Sena faced three batters in 0.2 innings of relief. Bowne closed the game, and picked up the win, allowing just two hits in 1.2 innings. 

Game Two
AMU again scored first, plating one in the bottom of the first, but Thomas put on the pressure by scoring nine in the third inning, then adding one in each of the final two frames. 

Center fielder Barbara Woll was 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles, four RBI and one run scored. Diaz and first baseman were each 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. 

Pitcher Rebecca Boesen (4-5) earned the complete 5.0-inning victory, striking out two, and allowing just one run from five hits and a pair of walks.
