THOMASVILLE, Ga. – With two minutes left in the second overtime period, Thomas University put a header in the back of the net to defeat Warner, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at the TU Soccer Complex.
After putting Warner under a lot of pressure down the left flank, TU earned a corner.
Hadas Prawer served in the ball to
Emily Linscer, who headed home the game winner.
"This team keeps finding ways to impress me," said Head Coach
Julie Orlowski. "On a day where we didn't start well and found ourselves behind 0-2 early, we managed to fight our way back into the match and grind out a victory. It was a gutsy performance by several players carrying some injuries."
With two games to play in the regular season, the Night Hawks knew Saturday's match was a must-win to have a chance to get into the Sun Conference Tournament.
"We told our team before the match that the conference tournament starts today," Orlowski said. "If we win, we can get into the tournament. If we lose, we are out."
TU (4-4-1) is now sixth in the league standings with one match to play against Johnson & Wales (5-2-1), which is tied for third in the rankings.
On Saturday, Warner scored just for minutes into the match, then added a second goal at 22:22. Thomas fought back to cut the deficit in half before the break.
Warner had trouble clearing the ball after a corner, and Prawer tracked down a loose ball and put it on frame. Then
Jana Pastorek drilled home the rebound at 33:35.
Just one minute after halftime,
Jen Clyde netted a penalty kick after a handball in the box to tie the match at two apiece.
TU goalkeeper
Jordin Sanchez made a pair of saves in the first overtime to keep the score knotted.
Then in the second overtime, Linscer attempted a shot that was saved by the Warner keeper before heading home the game winner.
"We need to recover after a very intense match and earn another three points next Saturday against a very good Johnson and Wales team," concluded Orlowski.
The Night Hawks and Wildcats will play Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. at the TU Soccer Complex in the final match of the regular season. Prior to the match TU will celebrate seniors Jennifer Clyde,
Dana Blough, student manager Angie Gutierrez and
Barbara Woll.
