TU Ties with MGSU in Double OT

COCHRAN, Ga. – The Thomas University women's soccer team netted a pair of goals in the second half to tie, 3-3, with Middle Georgia State University in a double overtime match Sunday afternoon in Cochran, Ga.

"I could not be more proud of this team," Head Coach Julie Orlowski said. "The character on display today was transformative. Despite much adversity, they saw the game through to the end. In a game like this, a tie can feel like a loss— but this is a special group that is getting better and better."

Thomas outshot MGSU 21-18, including 17-11 on goal. Thomas took 11 corner kicks to Middle Georgia's four.

Seniors Katy Hanscomb and Ciera McGriff-Duncan and sophomore Taylor Hults each recorded a goal for Thomas and Anna Gray tallied an assist. Rookie Selma Brorsson attempted five shots, four of which were on goal. Senior goalkeeper Kara Houston made eight saves, but allowed three goals in 110 minutes.

After three early shots by MGSU, the Night Hawks were on the attack, attempting seven shots (five on goal) over the next 15 minutes. TU found the back of the net first, when in the 24th minute, Hults scored an unassisted goal on a corner kick by Hanscomb.

MGSU scored back-to-back goals at 31:38, an own goal by TU, and 32:39, off a corner, to take the 2-1 halftime lead.

Just four minutes into the second period, Hanscomb tied the match with a brilliant header off a corner from Gray at 49:58.

In the 61st minute, TU took the 3-2 lead as McGriff-Duncan netted an unassisted goal on a one-on-one with heavy pressure from the MGSU defender.

Then with two minutes left in regulation, the Knights scored one more goal to tie and send the match into overtime.

In the first overtime, Thomas outshot MGSU, 5-1, but the Knights' goalkeeper made five saves to keep the match tied. In the second OT, TU had one shot on goal and MGSU took two shots, one of which was saved by Houston.

Thomas' home opener is Sept. 5 at 4 p.m. against Point (Ga.) at the TU Soccer Complex.
