Box Score THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University men's soccer team tied No. 5 Mobile (Ala.) through regulation, then lost, 2-1, in overtime Sunday afternoon at the TU Soccer Complex.
After a scoreless first half, Thomas scored first as junior
Gavin Rochford-Smith found the back of the net on a penalty kick at 49:43. Mobile tied it up on a PK at 85:36. Six minutes into overtime, Mobile scored on a corner kick to earn the 2-1 win.
TU attempted 11 shots, led by four shots from junior
Rene Rivera, and three from both junior
Jack Chambers and Rochford-Smith. Each of the three Night Hawks had one shot on goal. Mobile attempted 14 shots, seven on goal.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper
Ben Barnes made five saves and allowed two goals in nearly 97 minutes.
Mobile attacked first with a shot at 2:38, then had a corner a minute later. The Rams attempted two more shots before Chambers' shot sailed wide at 29:41. Rochford-Smith's shot at 32:47, the final shot of the half, went high.
In the second period, Rochford-Smith sent in a ball from the corner, but Rivera's shot hit the crossbar at 49:08. Rivera then tried a header, but it went wide.
After a trio of corners and two shots from Mobile, Rochford-Smith scored on a penalty kick at 49:43.
Each team exchanged four shots before Mobile scored on a penalty kick with five minutes to play, tying the match at one apiece.
In overtime, Barnes saved the first Mobile shot and TU freshman
Diego Azar's shot hit the crossbar before Mobile scored on a corner kick at 96:36 for the victory.
Thomas opens Sun Conference play next weekend when the Night Hawks host Ave Maria at noon on Saturday, Sept. 22 at the TU Soccer Complex.
