THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University women's soccer team lost, 4-0, to No. 3 William Carey (Miss.) Saturday afternoon in The Sun Conference / Southern States Challenge held at the TU Soccer Complex.
The Night Hawks are now 1-3-1 with all three losses to ranked teams in No. 3 WCU, No. 16 Mobile (Ala.) and No. 20 Georgia Gwinnett.
After a scoreless 44 minutes, William Carey snuck one in with just 10 seconds left in the first period to take the 1-0 lead going into the half. Following the break, WCU scored its second goal at the 50:00 mark, then added two more at 62:04 and 66:56 to take the 4-0 victory.
"Obviously WCU is a very well coached group," said Coach
Julie Orlowski. "We had a goal called back early on, but we managed to regroup."
In the first half, senior
Katy Hanscomb took a pair of shots, the first being saved by the WCU keeper and the second sailing wide of the net. Then in the 42nd minute, a header by
Emily Linscer, off a corner kick from
Victoria Trujic, went just high of the goal. William Carey, which attempted 16 shots, with six on goal, in the first period, connected on its final attempt of the half to take the 1-0 edge.
"
Kara Houston made several high level saves to almost get us to halftime at 0-0," added Orlowski. "Giving up one so close to half was disappointing but this team continues to impress me with how they battle."
WCU scored early in the second period, taking the 2-0 lead in the 50th minute. Thomas took a pair of corners from Trujic and
Kayla Folse over the next eight minutes, but were unable to capitalize on either play. In the final 28 minutes, WCU tallied four shots on goal and scored twice to earn the win.
Goalkeeper
Kara Houston made seven saves in 90 minutes for the Night Hawks.
Thomas opens Sun Conference play next weekend, hosting St. Thomas (Fla.) at 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 22 at the TU Soccer Complex.
