MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Thomas University swept Brewton-Parker (Ga.) in a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon to post the Night Hawks' longest winning streak in program history. TU's 10-game winning streak began on March 23 against Florida National.
Thomas (24-17) won the first game against B-PC, 10-2, then downed the Barons, 11-1, in the second outing.
TU has recorded nine straight games with double digit hits, including five outings with 15 or more. The Night Hawks have scored 12 or more runs in six of the last nine games.
This weekend Thomas faces Webber International at Babson Park, Fla., at 6 p.m. Friday. Then the teams play a doubleheader beginning at noon on Saturday.
Game One
Thomas scored seven runs over the first five innings before B-PC finally got on the board with one run in the bottom of the fifth. TU added two in the sixth, then each team scored one in the seventh.
Gavin Murphy,
Justin Young and
Wyatt Petrey each had a pair of hits in the game, while Young, Petrey and
Logan Place tagged home runs for the Night Hawks.
Starting pitcher
Chance Carter struck out three and allowed just four hits in 3.0 innings to earn the win.
Ryan Pierce pitched 2.0 innings of relief, allowing one run, then
Brent Summers picked up the save with two strikeouts and one run allowed.
With one out in the first,
Chase Hinson drew a walk and advanced to third on a wild throw. He then scored as
Jalbert Melo singled to left. Melo stole second, then crossed the plate after
Taylor Westbrook's base hit to right.
Petrey rocked his seventh home run of the season in the third, a two-run shot on a 3-0 count, which plated Westbrook.
An inning later, Tyler Keaton was hit by a pitch, then Place sent a two-run shot to left field, his fifth homer of the season.
With one out in the fifth, Young homered to center on an 0-1 count.
Two base hits and a sac bunt plated one run for the Barons in the fifth.
Place led off the sixth by drawing a walk, then Murphy singled to left. With one out, Melo hit a sac fly, plating Place. Westbrook then reached on a walk before Young hit an RBI single to right.
Jake Webb singled to left to start the seventh, advanced to second as Place drew a walk and scored on a double from Hinson.
Game Two
Thomas totaled nine runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, then added two more in the seventh to earn the 11-1 victory.
Starting pitcher
Justin Young earned the win after striking out three and allowing one run from four hits in 3.0 innings.
Melo picked up four RBI with a home run and a double while Young and Place each hit their second home run of the day.
With one out in the top of the third,
Keefer Beaty doubled to right then Webb singled to left. Hinson grounded out to the shortstop, which allowed Beaty to score. Melo hit an RBI double to left to score TU's second run of the inning, then scored on a single to left by Westbrook. Young singled to right to load the bases, then Petrey reached base on a bobbled ball, allowing Westbrook to score and give TU the 4-0 lead.
B-PC's lone run came in the third, as three consecutive Barons connected on base hits.
TU added three more runs in the fourth. Place reached on a walk and advanced to second on a sac bunt by Beaty. With two outs, Hinson was hit by a pitch, then Melo hit a three-run homer to left.
Petrey and Murphy hit back-to-back singles to lead off the fifth, then Place reached on an error, allowing Petrey to score. With two outs, Webb hit a sac fly to center field, plating Murphy.
Thomas added two more runs in the top of the seventh to take home the 11-1 victory. Petrey reached on an error, then with one out, Place hit a two-run homer to left on his first pitch.
