Petrey Rocks Two HR Against No. 9 St. Thomas

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – Thomas University's Wyatt Petrey tagged a pair of two-run homers in the Night Hawks' 11-8 loss to No. 9 St. Thomas (Fla.) Friday night at Varnedoe Stadium. 

Petrey now has four of TU's 16 home runs for the season. 

St. Thomas scored 11 runs over the first seven innings, then Thomas staged a comeback with two in the bottom of the frame and added six more in the eighth, but came up short, 11-8. 

Thomas falls to 14-15 overall and 2-8 in the Sun Conference this season while St. Thomas improves to 24-3 overall and 6-1 in the league.

Pitcher Daniel Williams was charged with the loss, despite striking out seven in 6.0 innings. He allowed nine runs from 13 hits. Ryan Pierce came in for 3.0 innings of relied, giving up two runs from three hits while sitting down two. 

St. Thomas scored four in the first, one in the fifth, one in the sixth and five in the seventh before Thomas plated a pair in the bottom of the seventh off a two-run homer from Petrey. 

In the eighth, Thomas added six runs from five hits. Chase Hinson led off with a double, then Jalbert Melo drew a walk. Taylor Westbrook hit an RBI single, then Gavin Murphy had a base hit to reload the bases. Landon Boyette walked, plating Melo. Dominic Berlin grounded into a double play, but Westbrook scored on the play. Jake Webb then hit an RBI single, just before Petrey hit his second two-run bomb of the game. 

The Night Hawks and Bobcats meet for a doubleheader on Saturday, with the first pitch at noon.
