THOMASVILLE, Ga. – Thomas University baseball fell, 9-8 and 6-2, to No. 9 St. Thomas in Saturday's doubleheader at Varnedoe Stadium.
Thomas falls to 14-17 overall and 2-10 in the Sun Conference.
TU is back in action March 20 against No. 2 Georgia Gwinnett at 4 p.m. at Varnedoe Stadium in Thomasville, Ga.
Game One
Both teams scored one in the first, then St. Thomas added three in the third, but Thomas answered with six in the fourth to take the 7-4 lead. The Bobcats tallied two in the sixth, and the Night Hawks extended the lead to 8-6 in the seventh, but three runs from STU in the top of the ninth sealed the game.
Taylor Westbrook was 2-for-5 with a home run, a double and two RBI while
Gavin Murphy was 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI.
Brandon Geiger started the game, allowing four runs from six hits in 2.0 innings, then
Justin Young came in for 5.2 innings of relief, allowing two runs from six hits.
Patrick Haley came in to close and took the loss, giving up three runs from four hits while striking out two in 1.1 innings.
Chase Hinson scored TU's first run after reaching on an error, stealing second and crossing the plate on a double by Westbrook.
Thomas' six-run fourth came from four hits and two STU errors. With one out,
Landon Boyette reached on an error then
Yovanny Peguero drew a walk. Back-to-back base hits by
Dominic Berlin and
Logan Place plated a pair of runs, then a double by Murphy added one more. Hinson then reached on an error, which allowed Place to score.
Jalbert Melo connected on a two-run single to give Thomas the 7-4 edge.
Westbrook hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the seventh, but St. Thomas scored three runs from four hits in the bottom of the ninth to take the win.
Game Two
Thomas held a 2-0 lead going into the sixth, but St. Thomas scored one in the six and five in the eighth to earn the 6-2 victory.
Pitcher
Dillon Rutland started the game, striking out three while allowing two runs from six hits in 7.0 innings.
Logan Hollyman took the loss, giving up four runs in 1.0 inning of relief.
Landon Boyette tagged his second home run of the season and
Logan Place connected on a double for the Night Hawks.
Chase Hinson drew a one-out walk, then with two outs, consecutive singles from Westbrook and
Wyatt Petrey plated Hinson.
In the fifth, Boyette hit a leadoff home run to give TU the 2-0 advantage.
St. Thomas answered with its own solo home run in the sixth, then scored five runs from three hits and one TU error in the eighth to take the victory.
