A Dozen Hits Lifts TU to Victory

LAKE WALES, Fla. – Thomas University connected on 12 hits in its 7-2 victory over Siena Heights (Mich.) Saturday morning in the Warner Invitational at Royals Field. 

Thomas was 3-2 in the Warner Invitational with wins over Saint Francis (Ill.), Bellevue (Neb.) and Siena Heights (Mich.), and losses to Spring Arbor (Mich.) and Lourdes (Ohio). 

The Night Hawks plated three runs in the fourth and added four more in the seventh before SHU scored two in the final frame of the game. 

Wyatt Petrey was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI while Landon Boyette and Chase Hinson each tagged a pair of hits for TU. Freshman Keyton Smith pitched 4.1 innings, striking out three and allowing just one hit and no runs to earn the victory. 

Five base hits from Thomas' first six batters in the top of the fourth led to three runs for the Night Hawks. Taylor Westbrook and Petrey each hit a single to start the inning. With one out, Boyette had an RBI single to right, Colin Kirkland hit a single to left and Trent Miller tagged a shot to left field that plated two more Night Hawks. 

TU added four runs from five hits in the top of the seventh. Murphy drew a leadoff walk, and Logan Place came in to pinch run. Chase Hinson singled to right followed by Jalbert Melo tagging a base hit that scored Place. Then with one out, Petrey, Dominic Berlin and Boyette each hit consecutive RBI singles

Thomas allowed two runs from three hits in the bottom of the seventh, but left two Saints on base to end the game. 

Thomas gets back to Sun Conference play next weekend as the Night Hawks host No. 9 St. Thomas (Fla.) in a three-game set at Varnedoe Stadium. First pitch on Friday is at 4 p.m., then the doubleheader begins at noon on Sunday.
