THOMASVILLE, Ga. – Thomas University 1B
Levi Hollingsworth connected on a pair of doubles in game two against No. 4 Southeastern (Fla.) University Saturday afternoon at Varnedoe Stadium. The Night Hawks lost both games, 18-1 and 8-5, to the Sun Conference foe.
TU returns to action on Feb. 27 at 4 p.m. in Albany, Ga., against Albany State.
Game One
SEU scored two in the first, then 11 in the second to give the Fire the early edge. SEU added one in the fifth and four in the sixth, before TU scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth.
Taylor Westbrook was 2-for-3 with an RBI and
Jalbert Melo was 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. TU used five pitchers, each tossing 2.0 or less innings.
Dillon Rutland took the loss after allowing eight runs, six earned, from nine hits in 1.1 innings.
SEU had three hits in the first inning and nine in the second to get ahead early. The Fire hit a solo homer in the fifth and connected on four more hits in the sixth. SEU scored its 18 runs from 20 hits while TU scored one run and had five hits.
In the sixth, Melo drew a leadoff walk then scored after base hits from
Landon Boyette and Westbrook.
Game Two
SEU scored a handful of runs over the first five innings, then TU tied it with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Southeastern answered with three in the top of the sixth to take the 8-5 win.
Daniel Williams started the game, striking out three and allowing eight runs, seven earned, in 5.2 innings.
Patrick Haley came in for 3.1 innings of relief, striking out two and giving up only two hits.
Levi Hollingsworth was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a pair of RBI. Westbrook and
Gavin Murphy each picked up an RBI, as well.
After seeing SEU score two in the third, one in the fourth and two more in the fifth, TU plated five in the fifth to tie the score.
With one out in the fifth, five consecutive Night Hawks connected on a base hit, including Melo,
Chase Hinson, Westbrook (RBI), Murphy (RBI) and
Wyatt Petrey. Hollingsworth then doubled, pushing two more across for TU. Boyette was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Petrey was thrown out at home as
Jake Webb reached on a fielder's choice, reloading the bases. Holliingworth then scored on a passed ball while
Justin Young was at the plate.
SEU scored three runs from four hits, including two homers, a triple and a single in the top of the sixth.
