Young Hits Walk-Off Double for Thomas

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University baseball team dropped game one, 7-4, but bounced back with a 5-4, 9-inning victory over Brewton-Parker College Tuesday at Varnedoe Stadium. 

In the second game, rightfielder Justin Young connected on a walk-off double to give Thomas the win. 

Catch Young and the Night Hawks in action this weekend against No. 4 Southeastern (Fla.). The first pitch on Friday is at 6 p.m., then the doubleheader begins at noon on Saturday at Varnedoe Stadium in Thomasville, Ga.

Game One
B-PC rallied for five runs in the top of the first and never looked back, downing the Night Hawks 7-4 in the first game. 

At the plate, CF Jalbert Melo and 1B Dominic Berlin each tagged home runs, while SS Chase Hinson recorded Thomas' first triple of the season and 3B Taylor Westbrook cracked a double. RHP Chance Carter took the loss for TU, allowing five runs from seven hits in 4.0 innings. 

Brewton-Parker scored five runs from six hits in the first frame, then Thomas scored four runs over the next three innings to make the score 5-4 heading into the fourth inning. 

Melo, the reigning Sun Conference Player of the Week, laced a leadoff home run to score Thomas' first run. Berlin made it back-to-back leadoff bombs as he sent a shot over the fence to start the second inning. Hinson then tripled and scored when 2B Luis Martinez grounded out to the B-PC shortstop. In the third, RF Justin Young singled then scored after a single from C Gavin Murphy and a pair of groundouts. 

B-PC tagged on one run in the sixth and one in the seventh to earn the win. 


Game Two
Thomas took the 3-0 lead in the third inning, then Brewton-Parker scored two in the fourth to draw the score within one. Thomas extended its lead, 4-2, in the sixth, then the Barons tied it in the seventh. The Night Hawks notched one more in the ninth to split the doubleheader. 

Melo continued his hot streak, connecting on a double, and drawing three walks. Young also connected on a double and Murphy went 3-for-4 at the plate. 

RHP Logan Hollyman recorded his first win of the season, striking out three and allowing one earned run on six hits in 3.0 innings. RHP Holden Alexander started the game, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing two runs from four hits and striking out two. RHP Ryan Pierce pitched one inning of relief and struck out one. 

Melo drew a walk to lead off the third, then 3B Landon Boyette singled and Westbrook drew a walk to load the bases. Melo scored after Young was hit by a pitch, then Murphy picked up an RBI with his base hit. Catcher Jake Webb's sac fly plated TU's third run of the inning. 

The Barons scored a pair in the fourth inning, then TU added one in the sixth. 

Webb singled, and Keefer Beaty was called in to pinch run. Beaty stole second, moved to third on a ground out and scored as pinch hitter Levi Hollingsworth sent a sac fly to center field. 

Brewton-Parker tied it up in the top of the seventh, connecting on four hits. Thomas collected a pair of hits in the bottom of the ninth to take the win. Westbrook singled, then Young hit a walk-off double to give Thomas the 5-4 win.
