WEST POINT, Ga. – The Thomas University women's basketball team opened the 2018-19 campaign Wednesday, defeating Point University (Ga.), 74-55.
The Night Hawks took a commanding lead in the first quarter, 25-10, then led 45-21 at the half. Point outscored TU 34-29 in the second period, but Thomas' first-half lead was too much to overcome.
Senior
Dymon Brown led all scorers with 22 points, hitting 5-of-8 from long range. She also had eight rebounds, four steals and two assists. Classmate
Micah Garvin also recorded 20 points, hitting seven shots from the field and six at the line, and pulled down 13 rebounds, for her first double-double of the season. Sophomore
Pkacia Johnson was one point away from a double-double, with 11 assists and nine points.
Brown hit a three just 40 seconds into the game to score TU's first points of the season. Brown then knocked down back-to-back treys to give the Night Hawks a 12-point advantage with six minutes left in the first quarter. After holding a 19-point advantage late in the first, Point knocked down a pair of free throws and hit a jumper in the final minute to draw the score within 15.
Thomas led by 23 midway through the second, after a three from junior
Jewel Montisano put TU up, 38-15. The Night Hawks kept the margin around 20 for most of the rest of the period, then led, 45-21, at the break.
The Skyhawks traded baskets with Thomas in the third quarter, as TU was held to just one trey, from Brown, with 27 seconds left in the stanza. In the fourth, Point outscored Thomas 21-14, and held TU without a bucket in the final two minutes.
Thomas returns to the hardwood tomorrow, to face Kennesaw State University in an exhibition match. The game tips at 5:30 p.m. in Kennesaw, Ga.
