Thomas Shuts Out FMU, 4-0, on Senior Day

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University women's soccer team shut out Florida Memorial University, 4-0, Saturday afternoon at the TU Soccer Complex as the Night Hawks honored their senior student-athletes.

Prior to the match, the team honored seniors Anna Felixson, Anna Gray, Katy Hanscomb, Kara Houston, Katy Hunt, Ciera McGriff-Duncan, Carolina Ochoa and Kaitlyn Stoltz

"We had a magical day today," Coach Julie Orlowski said. "We honored our seniors - two from England, one from Wales, Sweden, Iowa, Georgia and Florida, and our student athletic trainer from Japan - with the help of family and friends from around the world."

The Night Hawks are now 5-3-1 in league action, currently ranked fifth in the overall standings with one TSC match to play, against eighth-ranked SCAD-Savannah on Oct. 29. With a victory, TU is the third seed in the Sun Conference Tournament. With a loss or tie, Thomas will be fifth.

Thomas' defense allowed just one shot from Florida Memorial on Saturday, in the 85th minute, while the Night Hawks took 23, with 13 on goal. The match was TU's first at home since Oct. 3.

"Tactically we played very well, we just had trouble finding the net. In the past we have been proficient at finding the crossbar and post. Today we created great looks and hit the goalkeeper," said Orlowski.

TU attempted four shots and took a pair of corner kicks before freshman Selma Brorsson was subbed into the game, then two minutes later, scored Thomas' first goal, at 34:02.

"Selma got back into her scoring ways off a great through ball from Taylor Hults," Orlowski said. "FMU tried to play a high line and Selma timed her run well."

Then in the 42nd minute, senior Katy Hunt tapped in a header off a pass from junior Jen Clyde, to give TU the 2-0 lead going into the half. Clyde redirected a missed clearance off a corner kick and Hunt put the header in the back of the net to give TU a cushion going into halftime.

Senior Katy Hanscomb scored her third goal of the season in the 61st minute, firing a free kick from 35 yards out into the top of the net, after having a shot saved just six minutes earlier.

Thomas took four shots in the next three minutes, then freshman Jahzyiah Samuels-Williams took three cracks at it herself, firing off her rebounds until scoring the goal, her fifth of the season, in the 64th minute.

"Today gave us an opportunity to showcase our seniors and give us a glimpse of our future. But we are not done yet," said Orlowski.

TU wraps up the regular season on Monday, Oct. 29, facing SCAD-Savannah (Ga.) at 3 p.m. at the TU Soccer Complex in Thomasville, Ga.
