Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.

Sun Conference Men’s Soccer Champions

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Thomas University men's soccer team blanked Florida Memorial University, 4-0, Saturday afternoon at Vizcaya Park to win the 2018 Sun Conference Regular Season Championship.

The title is the second regular season championship for the men's soccer team at TU, as the Night Hawks won in 2016. Thomas men's soccer has also earned a pair of TSC Tournament Championships, in 2013 and 2014.

This is Thomas' seventh Sun Conference Championship title in school history. Along with four from men's soccer, the softball team won the regular season and tournament in 2018, and the men's golf team won the conference tournament in 2014.

TU soccer ended the regular season 7-1-1 in league play and 8-4-2 overall. Thomas will have a bye for the first round of the Sun Conference Tournament, then will host the semifinals on Tuesday, Nov. 6. The TSC Tournament bracket will be announced at a later date.

On Saturday, the Night Hawks scored early and often on their way to the third shutout victory of the season. TU outshot FMU 14-9 overall and 5-2 on goal.

After a pair of shot attempts in the first 10 minutes, Gavin Rochford-Smith scored Thomas' first goal off an assist from Myke Zamor in the 13th minute.

Then in the 30th minute, the FMU goalkeeper cleared the ball to midfield, and Cavan Daley's header put the ball back into TU's possession. Rene Rivera controlled the ball, sped past the defender down the left side, and when he cut back to the middle of the box, he was fouled. Rivera then ripped the penalty kick home to give the Night Hawks a 2-0 lead in the 30th minute.

Thomas scored its third goal just five minutes into the second period. TU goalkeeper Ben Barnes sent a ball three-fourths of the way down the field to Y'sef Glass, who corralled the ball on the left side, shook a defender, then slipped the ball past the FMU keeper and into the lower right side of the net.

FMU took just one shot over the next 20 minutes, before the Night Hawks scored again in the 71st minute.

Barnes again started the attack by sending a ball to midfield, where Sam Eyes controlled and weaved through the defense, into the left side of the box, where he was fouled. Henry Jones took the penalty kick and tucked the ball into the lower left corner of the net.

TU outshot FMU 3-2 in the final 20 minutes, taking the 4-0 victory.
